Derby contenders on the track at Churchill

Union Rags waiting for the track to open after the renovation.

With the Kentucky Derby a week away from today, it was a good morning to visit Churchill Downs and take pictures of the Derby and Oaks horses. Some of the horses went out before the designated Derby/Oaks contender time of 8:30-8:45, and others haven’t shipped in yet. Here are photos of nine of the colts, and tomorrow Ill post pictures of the Oaks fillies.

  1. Union Rags just looks sooooo classy. I think he'll win the Derby (ie. he'll outrun his pedigree). He's got to be as good looking a horse as any other I've every seen (albeit only in pics)! Great shots, btw....

  3. The photo of Union Rags with JL up and Matz on the pony is stellar, FJK. It's now my desktop wallpaper (hope you don't mind, lol) and the look on JL's face is priceless. Thanks for sharing these.
